What is a Steam Trap?

A steam trap is a kind of self-acting industrial valve used to discharge live steam from a system while containing any condensate within the system. Steam traps are found in both industrial and residential settings, where they are typically used to maintain the energy balance and temperature of systems. Primarily, steam traps are used to remove condensate from a system. When steam is formed, its energy is transferred through the system and some of this energy is converted into liquid form – condensate. If it is not removed from the system, condensate can cause water hammer and other problems associated with steam systems. In addition to discharging condensate, steam traps are also used to expel air, dirt and other noncondensable which is collected within the system. In some cases, they can also be used to control steam in a system – preventing it from escaping where it is not needed.

Types of Steam Traps

Steam traps come in several different varieties, each optimized for specific applications. The most common type of steam trap used in industrial applications is the thermodynamic steam trap. These devices use principles of thermodynamics, such as Boyle's Law, to operate and are not affected by changes in velocity or pressure. They tend to be more reliable and require less maintenance than other types of steam traps.Other types of steam traps include mechanical, thermostatic and impulse steam traps. Mechanical traps utilize levers, diaphragms and poppets to open and close, while thermostatic traps are temperature dependent. Lastly, impulse steam traps utilize an impulse piping system that allows pressure lift to open the valve and vent steam once the condensate is separated.

How do Steam Traps Work?

Steam traps are designed to automatically open and close in order to discharge condensate while preventing the loss of steam from the system. The most common type, thermodynamic steam traps, operate by creating a differential pressure between the outlet and inlet of the trap. The steam trap works by admitting steam into the body of the trap. This steam then travels through the trap, where it is cooled and converted into condensate. The condensate, which is much more dense than steam, is then discharged from the system. Meanwhile, the steam that was admitted is held in the trap body and is prevented from exiting the system.

Why are Steam Traps important?

Steam traps are essential components of any steam system. Not only do they ensure that condensate is returned to the boiler or condensate return tank where it can be reused, but they also help to maintain the temperature and pressure of the steam system by preventing the loss of steam. Additionally, they can help to eliminate dirt, air and noncondensables from the system, which can cause corrosion and reduced efficiency.Steam traps are also important for safety and energy savings. As steam is a valuable, albeit expensive, energy source, steam traps help to reduce the amount of steam wasted, conserving energy and lowering operational costs. Additionally, steam traps can help to guard against the water hammer effect, which can occur when large amounts of steam suddenly escape from the system at a high pressure.

Conclusion

Steam traps are simple yet essential components of any steam system. They are designed to automatically open and close in order to discharge condensate while preventing the escape of steam. Different types of steam traps are available for specific applications.Steam traps are important for a variety of reasons, including their role in maintaining the pressure and temperature of systems, plus their ability to reduce the amount of steam wasted and guard against the water hammer effect. It is therefore important to ensure that steam traps are correctly installed and maintained in order to keep steam systems running smoothly and efficiently.
