Water Meter

A water meter is a device that measures the amount of water passing through an enclosed space, such as a pipe, or through a reservoir or tank. The meter measures volume in gallons, cubic feet or liters, and may be used for irrigation, drinking, washing and other uses.

The most common type of water meter is known as a "lug" or "nutating disc" type meter. A nutating disc meter consists of a disc driven by a mechanical shaft, with a series of gears, called cogs. As the water passes through the space, the cogs cause the disc to rotate, which in turn produces a measurable flow rate. This type of meter is usually found installed horizontally in pipes, and is suited to low-pressure flow conditions.

Another type of meter is the "gearwheel" meter, which is similar to a nutating disc, but instead of cogs, has wheel segments. In this type of meter, the wheel segments are driven by the water flow and produce a measurable flow rate. The wheel segments are usually made of plastic or metal, and can be either vertically or horizontally mounted.

Meters may also be classified according to their construction. There are metallic, plastic and composite types. Metallic meters are commonly used in industrial applications, due to their robust design and ability to withstand high pressures and temperatures. Plastic and composite meters are often found in residential applications, due to their lower cost and flexibility.

Metering is used to measure the amount of water that passes through a pipe or reservoir, as well as to ensure proper distribution of water to its users. Metering is also used to help conserving water in areas where drought is a reality

Installing a water meter is an important step in conserving water and controlling utility costs. Meters can be used to provide accurate readings of water usage, and can also let customers know when water usage is becoming too costly for their budget.

Meters are highly accurate, reliable and durable, making them the best way to measure water usage. Meters come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and styles, and can be customized to meet the needs of a variety of applications. In addition to metering, many meters also measure temperature, pressure and in some cases, even analyze the water’s composition.

Water meters are key in conserving resources, managing water costs and helping to prevent overuse. Using a meter can help identify where there is potential water waste in a home or business, and help pinpoint areas of potential repair needs. By measuring the exact footage and usage of water, customers can use their water more efficiently and save money in the process.
