U Bend / Return Bend - When and Where to Use It A U bend or return bend is an essential component in many plumbing and piping systems. It is used to make a connection between two pieces of pipe – typically a straight run and an elbow – to allow for a continuous flow of water or other liquid through the pipes. In short, it’s a bend that creates a return. A U bend is often thought of as a P-shaped fitting, as there are three ‘parts’ to it – two horizontal runs, one going in and one going out, and one 90 degree bend at the very bottom of the fitting. It’s important to take the diameter of each individual piece into account when looking at U bends and return bends, as the overall size of the fitting will depend on this.
