What is a Steam Trap? A steam trap is a kind of self-acting industrial valve used to discharge live steam from a system while containing any condensate within the system. Steam traps are found in both industrial and residential settings, where they are typically used to maintain the energy balance and temperature of systems. Primarily, steam traps are used to remove condensate from a system. When steam is formed, its energy is transferred through the system and some of this energy is converted into liquid form – condensate. If it is not removed from the system, condensate can cause water hammer and other problems associated with steam systems. In addition to discharging condensate, steam traps are also used to expel air, dirt and other noncondensable which is collected within the system.
