Water Meter A water meter is a device that measures the amount of water passing through an enclosed space, such as a pipe, or through a reservoir or tank. The meter measures volume in gallons, cubic feet or liters, and may be used for irrigation, drinking, washing and other uses. The most common type of water meter is known as a "lug" or "nutating disc" type meter. A nutating disc meter consists of a disc driven by a mechanical shaft, with a series of gears, called cogs. As the water passes through the space, the cogs cause the disc to rotate, which in turn produces a measurable flow rate. This type of meter is usually found installed horizontally in pipes, and is suited to low-pressure flow conditions. Another type of meter is the "gearwheel" meter, which is similar to a nutating disc, but instead of cogs, has wheel segments.
